2015 Volkswagen Jetta vs Toyota Camry - Tallahassee, FL
Volkswagen Jetta vs Toyota Camry Overview
It’s safe to say that it would be a herculean task to upstage the Camry, the midsize sedan offering from Toyota. Renowned for its reliability, high-quality build, and awesome durability, the Camry has consequently become ubiquitous on roads throughout America as it has become perennial best-seller. However, over the last couple of years, entries from other automakers have brazenly challenged the supremacy of the Camry—with more exciting driving dynamics, more technologies, and more appealing styling. Indeed, it has come to the point that Toyota’s legacy is the only factor that keeps the Camry from tumbling down. One of such challengers is the Jetta, a zippy car from Volkswagen, and for the 2015 model year, it just might be a better buy than the Camry.

Trim Options
For starters, the Jetta is available in Sport, S, SE, and SEL trims: all with sport-like driving thanks to a tight four-wheel independent suspension. And with most of these trims, you can get variations, depending on factors such as the body type, additional standard features or type of engine. For instance, a Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) features a turbodiesel engine, with includes the standard turbocharging technology, but with cylinder-direct fuel injection; and the GLI variant is really a sedan version of the smaller Volkswagen Golf GTI. On the other hand, the Camry mostly sticks with the trim naming convention of previous years: the LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. Besides the ability to swap the standard engine on the two higher-end trims with more powerful ones, there are little to no surprises with the variances between the trim
Specs
Plus, the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta gives twice the number of engine choices as the 2015 Toyota Camry. At one end is the 1.4-liter 16-valve inline four-cylinder turbocharged/intercooled engine, which provides 182 horsepower at 5,000 and 184 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque at 1,400 RPM. At the other end is the 2.0-liter with the same specs as the smallest engine, but with a lot more horsepower (210 horsepower at 5,300 RPM) and torque (207 lb-ft at 1,700 RPM). Volkswagen has made a recent change to smaller engine sizes that maintain the power of a larger engine, but give exceptional fuel economy.
Fuel Economy
And speaking of fuel efficiency, the 2015 Volkwagen Jetta would save you a lot more money at the gas station, as well as reduce the number of trips there. The 1.4-liter engine in particular is outstanding in that regard: providing the nameplate peaks of 28 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. The 2015 Toyota Camry, on the other hand, can only manage 25 mpg city economy and 35 mpg highway economy.
